New Zealand's 11 national public holidays are spread unevenly across the year. Some sit mid-week and do little more than break up a working week. Others fall right next to a weekend, giving you a genuine long break if you're willing to take one or two extra days of leave. In 2026, the calendar works out better than average — there are several points in the year where a small investment of annual leave returns a disproportionately long break.
This guide walks through every major opportunity in 2026. If you book the right days off early, you can take 20 days of total time off using only 9 or 10 days of actual annual leave.
How the Maths Works
The principle is simple: public holidays are already paid, so you only need to fill in the gaps around them. A public holiday on a Friday automatically gives you a three-day weekend. Add one leave day on the Thursday and you have a four-day break while only using one day of leave. Add two more days and you have six consecutive days off for two leave days.
The trick is identifying which public holidays in 2026 are "bridge-able" — where a small number of leave days connect the holiday to a weekend and create something significantly longer. Here's how 2026 stacks up.
New Year: 1–4 January 2026 (Four Days, Zero Leave)
New Year's Day (1 January) and the Day After New Year's Day (2 January) are both public holidays. In 2026 they fall on Thursday and Friday. That means you get Thursday 1 January through Sunday 4 January off with no leave required at all — a four-day start to the year.
If you want to extend it, take Monday 5 January off and you have five consecutive days for just one leave day.
Waitangi Day: 5–8 February 2026 (Four Days, One Leave Day)
Waitangi Day falls on Friday 6 February 2026, creating a natural three-day weekend. Take Thursday 5 February off and you have a four-day break using just one leave day. This is one of the best value opportunities in the year because the Thursday is the only gap to fill.
This timing also makes it ideal for a short domestic trip — Northland and the Bay of Islands tend to fill up around Waitangi Day so book early.
Easter: 2–6 April 2026 (Five Days, One Leave Day)
Easter is always the longest public holiday cluster of the year. Good Friday (3 April) and Easter Monday (6 April) are both national public holidays, and in 2026 they fall either side of a weekend. You already get four consecutive days off (Friday to Monday) with no leave needed.
Take Wednesday 1 April off and you extend it to six days for one leave day. Take both Wednesday and Thursday off and you get nine days from Saturday 28 March to Sunday 6 April using just two leave days — combined with the weekend before Good Friday.
ANZAC Day: 25–27 April 2026 (Three Days, Zero Leave)
ANZAC Day falls on Saturday 25 April. When a public holiday falls on a Saturday, the substitute weekday off is Monday 27 April. So you get a three-day weekend (Saturday to Monday) automatically, with no leave required.
ANZAC Day is only three weeks after Easter in 2026. If you've been strategic with Easter leave, you might find you've already used most of your early-year budget. ANZAC weekend is best used as a zero-cost rest rather than extended.
King's Birthday: 30 May–1 June 2026 (Three Days, Zero Leave)
King's Birthday is the first Monday in June. In 2026 that's 1 June, so you get the standard three-day long weekend automatically. The weekend of 30 May–1 June is a popular time for the Queenstown Winter Festival season and ski trips to Ruapehu and Cardrona, as snowfall is usually reliable by then.
Matariki: 26–28 June 2026 (Three Days, Zero Leave)
Matariki falls on Friday 26 June 2026 — a three-day weekend from Friday to Sunday. Since Matariki only became a public holiday in 2022, it's still underused as a travel window. Expect this to become more popular over coming years.
Combine King's Birthday and Matariki by taking the week of 2–5 June off and you get 19 consecutive days off (30 May to 28 June) using just five leave days. That's an extended mid-winter break that covers both holidays.
Labour Day: 24–26 October 2026 (Three Days, Zero Leave)
Labour Day is the fourth Monday of October — 26 October in 2026. Another standard three-day weekend. Daylight saving has just begun (it starts the last Sunday of September), so the evenings are getting longer. A good time for camping or road trips in the South Island.
Take Friday 23 October off and you extend it to four days for one leave day.
Christmas and Boxing Day: 24–28 December 2026 (Five Days, Two Leave Days)
Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December and Boxing Day on Saturday 26 December. The Saturday Boxing Day creates a substitute on Monday 28 December. That gives you Friday 25 and Monday 28 as paid public holidays, with the weekend in between.
Take Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 December off using two leave days and you get a nine-day break from Wednesday 23 to Sunday 3 January 2027 (which includes New Year's Day and the Day After New Year's).

Tips for Booking Early
A few practical things to keep in mind. Accommodation around Easter, King's Birthday and Matariki tends to book out several months in advance, especially in popular destinations like Queenstown, Rotorua and the Marlborough Sounds. If you have a specific trip in mind, get the leave request in with your employer and book travel as early as possible.
It's also worth checking with your employer whether they have a leave blackout period around Christmas and the New Year. Many businesses, especially in retail and hospitality, restrict leave in late December. Know your employer's policy before you plan an extended Christmas break.
Finally, if you have accrued annual leave that you're required to take, use it around these holiday clusters. You get more total time off per leave day, which makes the accrued leave go further.
